Chris Dumond, who bought the book as a gift, said: “My grandfather grew up in Havelock in the 30s and 40s before joining the Navy, but had not been back often. He is in his 80s now. I got this for him for Christmas and he wouldn’t put it down.”

HAVELOCK — Historian and author Eddie Ellis has donated the bulk of his lifetime collection of books and other materials to the Joyner Library at East Carolina University.
Ellis’ collection contains vast history about Sir Henry Havelock, the city of Havelock and eastern Craven County.
Since he was a child, Eddie Ellis has been on a search to discover the history of Havelock and Craven County. As a reporter for the Havelock Progress, Ellis turned over stones to uncover stories that told of the region’s colorful past.
Ellis continued that journey of discovery as founding publisher of the Havelock News a quarter century ago. In 2005, Ellis authored “In This Small Place,” which gathered together much of what he had learned in a book detailing the history of the Havelock area going back to the Neusiok Indians.
Now, five years later, Ellis has published another work that focuses on the area’s visual imagery.
Growing up, Edward Barnes Ellis Jr. rode his bike all over downtown New Bern. As he cycled by the images and statues of the bears in the city, Ellis wondered why they all had long, red, curled tongues hanging out of their mouths.
Eddie Ellis has been sifting through haystacks and coming up with needles for nearly 40 years.
The needles are actually little nuggets of historical information, buried in archives across the country.
Ellis has found the needles that point to a small place in eastern North Carolina called Havelock.
It’s not a small place now, said Ellis during a recent walk along a section of railroad track that was once a hub of activity.
That spot along the track, now grown over by trees and shrubs, was a favorite hangout for Ellis and his friends when they were kids growing up in Havelock. Click here for full story.
Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC) was presented a copy of the new Havelock history, In This Small Place, during a visit to the Havelock Tourist and Event Center. The book is available for purchase at the Tourist Center which is located directly behind the Hampton Inn on US 70.
